SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) – More than 600 motorcyclists gathered for the 30th Annual Bike Blessing at Saint Daniel’s Church in Syracuse.

Even with leather vests, helmets and nicknames like “Junkyard,” bikers at the blessing know their motorcycles aren’t the toughest vehicles on the road.

“I’ll take any advantage I can against the cars driving around the roads,” said Joe Riordan. Monsignor Eugene Yennock of Saint Daniel’s church weaved through more than 600 bikes and sprinkled them with holy water to bless their riders and passengers. “I just feel like He’s always there with you and when you get blessed it just feels like an added incentive an added extra covering that you’ve been blessed,” said Patty Gilberti of Cicero.

Along with the blessing came a reminder. No matter what you’re driving, you can help keep the roads safe. “We want people to be aware of their surroundings. With all the texting and distractions drivers have today, your hot dog signs, you know, you’re confused enough and that goes for motorcycles too. We’re not trying to single out car drivers, everybody should be aware of what’s going on,” said John Hayden, President of the Onondaga County Chapter of ABATE.

Money was also raised at the event for the Rescue Mission.

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Minor and Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney have declared May “Motorcycle Safety Month.”
