Feds ok Arizona exemption of motorcycle emission testing

Motorcycle Emission testing no longer needed in Arizona

by Gary Harper

PHOENIX — The dreaded motorcycle emission testing many of us have to go through. One-point-two million vehicles get tested every year in the Arizona, which generates more than $30 million annually.

It’s a lot of money, but, one group of drivers will no longer have to pay for emissions testing again. Who are they?

Motorcyclists. Up until now, motorcycles had to undergo emissions testing just like cars. But not any more.

“It’s great news for motorcycle riders here that have the challenge of putting themselves through the expense and aggravation of passing the emissions test,” said Mike Taylor.

Taylor is the service manager at a Harley Davidson dealership in North Phoenix. Like many motorcycle enthusiasts, he’s thrilled with the announcement.

“For a lot of people, this is going to be really great news because of less expense and less aggravation that they’ll have to endure annually,” said Taylor.

Back in 2008, Arizona passed a measure that made motorcycle emission testing obsolete. However, before the exemption could be implemented, Arizona needed the blessing from the Federal Government. Well, not surprisingly, it took the Feds almost five long years to give that approval, which means effective immediately, motorcycles are now exempt.

But the measure is bitter sweet for motorcycle shops and mechanics whose revenue included motorcycle emission testing. While they embrace the idea because they love bikes, the new exemption will reduce their revenue because they’ll no longer have to inspect and repair motorcycles which may have failed an emissions test.

“From our aspect as a dealership, overall it’s going to impact us on an annual basis close to $40,000 a year based on the number of bikes we put through our shop,” said Taylor.
