PIQUA – Gover Harley-Davidson invites the public to participate in a program to send postcards to those who are serving in the Armed Forces.
The 165 men and women of the 1487th Transportation Company out of Piqua have been deployed to Afghanistan since November 2012, and is scheduled to return home this fall.
The unit’s previous deployment was to Iraq in 2004.
This past spring, Gover Harley-Davidson asked Sgt. William Lee, the unit’s Rear Detachment Readiness NCO, what the public could do to assist the deployed soldiers. “Notes from home go a long way with the soldiers,” Lee said. So in conjunction with Western Ohio Graphics, Gover Harley-Davidson provided the printing cost of the postcards.
The first set of completed postcards left for Afghanistan in June to arrive to the unit by the Fourth of July. The postcards were meant to be notes of thanks and support to troops from the local community.
Students from local day care facilities and camps completed postcards, as well as members of the community.
The public is invited to stop into Gover Harley-Davidson to complete one or more postcards for the unit between now and Saturday, Aug. 3. The completed postcards will be mailed to the 1487th Transportation Company to arrive in mid-September, about a month or two prior to their homecoming.
Look for Hero Day at Gover H-D on Saturday, Sept. 14, which is being planned to further honor the men and women who have risked their lives for freedom and thank those who have served the nation.
Gover Harley-Davidson is located one half-mile east on Ash Street, Route 36, Piqua.
